Distance Learning Definitions
It is important to understand many of the term associated with Distance learning and online classes within the KCTCS system and the relationship with KYVU. Please review the following terms:
Blog
A Web site (or section of a Web site) where users can post a chronological, up-to-date e-journal entry of their thoughts. Each post usually contains a Web link.
Broadband
Refers to the two main types of high-speed Internet service: DSL (which you get from the phone company) or a cable connection (which you get from the cable company). There is also a third type of broadband connection called fiber optic (which can deliver TV channels as well as the Internet).
Browser
Software that allows you to find and see information on the Internet. Commonly used browsers are Microsoft Internet Exporer & Netscaped Navigator.
Delivering College
For the purposes of Internet courses is defined as the college at which the faculty member teaching the class is employed. For ITV, the Delivering College is the college from which the class originates.
Download
Using the Network to transfer files from one computer to another.
Email (& attachments)
The transmission of messages from one computer user to another using an email software such as outlook, yahoo, gmail, and others.
Home College
Defined as the college to which the student is admitted and from which the student will receive a credential upon successful completion of a program of study. The Home College must have program approval in order to serve as the Home College for a given degree.
Hyperlink
Image or text within a webpage that takes you to another part of that page or an entirely different page on the web when clicked.
Instant Messaging (IM)
A technology that gives users the ability to identify people online and to exchange messages with them in real time.
Interactive Television (ITV or closed circuit)
Refers to courses delivered point to point or point to multi-point through two-way, compressed video. ITV is synchronous where the student and teacher are separated only by space.
Internet
Global information networks connecting millions of computers. Also known as the Net.
ISP
Short for Internet Service Provider, a company that provides users with access to the Internet.
ITV facilitators
Manage ITV facilities and procedures at each college.
KET College Course
(Telecourses) utilize video broadcast by Kentucky Educational Television. Students may view the Telecourse at home during scheduled broadcast times or videotape the program for viewing at the learner's convenience. In this distance learning modality, the Home College and Delivering College are the same.
KET Coordinators
Are identified at each college to manage the selection of KET Telecourse
Online Learning
Refers to courses delivered by the Internet (World Wide Web). Online learning may be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous or only asynchronous. The teacher and student are separated by time or place or both time and place.
Podcasts
Usually a free, downloadable audio/video file that can be listened to on your computer--where you can burn it to a compact disc--or on an MP3 player or iPod to enjoy on planes, trains and automobiles. There are also just audiocast which contain only the audio portion.
Plug-in
Downloadable software that adds enhanced capabilities to a browser enabling the user to view, hear, or interact with non-standard display formats.
Search Engine
Web-based software that searches for and returns documents on the Web based upon specified keywords.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
The address of a document/page such as www.hazard.kctcs.edu located on the Web.
World Wide Web (WWW)
A global, networked system that serves data images, documents, multimedia, via the Internet.
