NorthStar

JUNE 29, 2008 - JULY 12, 2008

NorthStar is a new program aimed at giving talented and ambitious high school students the opportunity to work with master craftsmen in a two-week, intensive, studio situation.

State-of-the-art facilities await the students, who will be immersed in the process of design and completion of works in either Wood/Furniture Design or Jewelry/Metal Design. Design philosophy, extensive technique and successful studio business practices will be included in the all-day studio sessions. Visiting artist/professionals who are themselves successful studio designers and craft marketing specialists will compliment a program aimed at giving each student the knowledge and belief that they can pursue a career as a successful studio designer/craftsperson.

The cost of this program has been graciously underwritten by a private foundation that supports entrepreneurship in the arts, a desire to assist students in becoming excellent contemporary craft designers and the mission of the Kentucky School of Craft. There will be no cost for materials, room or board to the students. Housing and meals will be provided.  Resident Student Artists will be on hand to act as counselors for the students during their stay. Special events have also been planned to let us all “blow off a little steam”.

High school students who will be entering their junior or senior year as well as 2008 graduates are eligible to apply. Space permits only 8 students in Jewelry/Metal Design and 8 students in Wood/Furniture Design, so apply soon.  Application will be made through a simple form currently available online at www.hazard.kctcs.edu.

The “NorthStar” Program offers students the unique opportunity to increase their knowledge in the rich traditions and heritage of craft. Young artists will be exposed to the possibility of a rewarding career in the decorative arts precisely at the point when they are making life decisions. Teaching will be hands on and experiential using the time honored Master/Apprentice system. The curriculum will actively involve students in the materials and processes of their craft and its history, both regionally and worldwide. The facilities and quality of instruction offered will be exceptional. High school students anywhere are seldom afforded a studio experience of this depth.

"We believe there
are many students who would love to study in the craft disciplines, and share the desire to operate their own studio businesses as designers and makers. However, because of a variety of factors, students don’t believe this is a viable option “NorthStar” is committed to giving high school students a dynamic and authentic experience and the self-confidence to know they can become successful design/business owners”.   Tim Glotzbach, Former Dean and Founding Director, The Kentucky School of Craft
