                               Developmental Studies Program

                                                                             Program Goals

1. Ensure proper placement by assessing each learner's level of preparedness for college course work.

    The students will:

•  Provide ACT scores and/or take a placement test

•  Be given the opportunity to take a placement verification test in all developmental courses during or before the first week of class

2. Develop in each learner the skills and attitudes necessary for the attainment of academic career and

     life goals.

     The students will:

•  Begin to clarify goals for short and long term planning

•  Improve study habits and test taking skills

•  Recognize the interconnectedness of knowledge gained

•  Apply knowledge gained to new situations

•  Use listening skills effectively

•  Use appropriate resources to achieve learning objectives

•  Collaborate with others to accomplish tasks

•  Identify areas where they are having difficulty and make appropriate adjustments

3. Provide developmental instruction that allows students to complete credit level coursework   

      successfully.

     Reading

      The students will:

•  Read information and draw reasonable conclusions from the information

•  Demonstrate improvement in their vocabulary skills

•  Exhibit improvement in their study skills

•  Demonstrate understanding of and improvement in critical thinking skills

•  Improve their reading comprehension abilities

•  Demonstrate appreciation and understanding of the different purposes of a variety of reading genres

    English

     The students will:

•  Create a thesis and use clear, detailed support for the thesis

•  Understand the parts of the writing process and apply them to their own writing

•  Understand the significance of audience and purpose in each piece of writing and be able to adapt their

   writing to accommodate a variety of audiences and purposes

•  Understand the importance of developing ideas fully and organizing their writing to accommodate a variety

   of purposes

•  Demonstrate understanding and usage of grammar and editing skills

•  Understand, discuss and react to a variety of print materials

•  Understand the basics of the research process and documentation of sources

    Mathematics

      Given a mathematical problem, students will:

•  Interpret the problem

•  Determine the correct mathematical operations for solving the problem

•  Use estimation in reaching a solution

•  Solve the problem

•  Determine the reasonability of the solution
