UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM

 

  The Upward Bound Program helps under-represented high school students, whose parents did not graduate from      college, prepare for higher education. During the school year, participants receive academic assistance, college

  prep, and career awareness activities. During the summer, participants attend a six week residential component where    they receive instruction in literature, composition, science, foreign languages, and mathematics, as well as cultural        enrichment and personal development..

 

  Nationally, the Upward Bound Program was founded in 1963 and was the nations first such program targeted       specifically at and for under-represented students. The program has been in existence at Hazard Community &           Technical College since 1990.

 

  The program's objectives are to provide students with access to educational opportunities and to increase the

  number of those students who go on to college, while simultaneously developing the skills needed to be

  independent, contributing individuals. The program is funded by the United States Department of Education and

  is administered through Hazard Community & Technical College's Pre-Enrollment Department.

How to Apply

 Students should talk to their high school guidance counselor. Students can also talk with the Upward Bound Program      Counselors during weekly in-school visits to target high schools. Interested students may call and request an

Participants

The Hazard Community & Technical College Upward Bound

Program serves 120 students from Breathitt, Knott, Letcher and

Perry Counties . Participants in Hazard Community & Technical

College 's Upward Bound Program must have the potential to be the

first college graduates in their families. In addition, students should

demonstrate academic need and have the potential to succeed in college.

 


The Two Components

 

The Academic Year:

Program Counselors make in-school visitations at each of the target

high schools weekly. During these in-school sessions, participants attend

workshops dealing with academics, careers, college prep,

study skills, personal development and career awareness.

 The Summer Component: .

During the six week Summer Component participants attend academic enrichment        classes, group counseling sessions, and staff led activities. Rising juniors and seniors are   offered the opportunity to enroll in a minimum of three hours college credit. Bridge          participates, those students who participate during summer following high school

graduation, are offered a minimum of six hours college credit.  The summer component                                                culminates with a week long trip. In recent years, Hazard Community & Technical                                                       College Upward Bound has visited such places as, Chicago , New Orleans , New                                                    York City and Florida .
